Among specific activities, IT administrators see the greatest potential for automation in patch management. Most organizations and MSP providers today need to handle an ever-expanding range of tasks, both to ensure their own or their customers' IT security and to meet current or future legal requirements. They primarily see automation as a means of freeing up the capacity of their IT administrators and increasing their ability to respond quickly to incidents and resolve serious cases – at the expense of routine activities. The most interesting findings from the survey: - The average importance rating for automation reached 7.3 out of 10. While 53% of respondents selected 8–10 points (most important), only 4% selected 1–3 points (least important). - Of the most common activities, IT administrators would most need to automate patch management (60%), responses to alerts (51%) and basic system maintenance (48%). - Respondents expect automation to deliver faster incident response (60%), freed-up staff capacity (58%), more time to address serious cases (55%) and error elimination (47%). “When most of us started in IT, hardware was extremely expensive and the work of an IT administrator was relatively cheap,” said **Martin Haller, CEO at PATRON-IT**, one of ZEBRA SYSTEMS' partners for N-able solutions, at the conference. “Today, hardware can be acquired at a reasonable cost, while labor is expensive, and with the arrival of the NIS-2 directive it will become even more expensive, while the availability of IT administrators on the market will worsen further.
