Achieving effective cyber protection requires meeting a number of conditions, five of which are absolutely crucial. “According to the latest information, the total cost of dealing with the ransomware attack at Benešov Hospital has risen to CZK 60 million. And if the Central Bohemian Region administration claims that the hospital's security was at a standard level comparable to other hospitals, then the current security of Czech healthcare facilities needs to be radically improved,” said **Aleš Hok, Acronis solutions business manager for the Czech Republic and Slovakia**, at the conference. In this context, Acronis mentions 5 basic conditions for defending against similar attacks in the future: - **Well-hidden backups** – ensure that backups are absolutely inaccessible, either by alternately shutting down storage systems, using tapes, or strictly adhering to the 3 – 2 – 1 rule (storing backups offsite) - **Active ransomware protection** – aimed at preventing data encryption at its source or the infection of backups from which systems can then no longer be restored, as happened at Benešov Hospital. - **Firewall** – divide the network into smaller segments and use a firewall between individual network segments as well. - **Central monitoring** – centrally and independently monitor protection services on devices and receive alerts about situations such as machines running while the monitored antivirus, backup, etc. services are not running on them. - **Endpoint security** – infections usually originate here, most often today via email, which must be protected against spam and phishing already at the mail server level. In addition to these basic conditions, there are a number of other measures; for example, the national authority **NÚKIB** published 47 recommendations on its website in connection with the latest attacks. With the growing volume of confidential data in healthcare, healthcare facilities are becoming a more popular target for hackers. They rightly assume a greater willingness to cooperate, and therefore a higher likelihood that the ransom will be paid.
