The new report states that 4 out of 5 organizations experienced an attack on their infrastructure by exploiting vulnerabilities at third-party IT vendors, while the average amount demanded in a ransomware attack increased by 33%. “Organizations of all sizes fall victim to these attacks, but the impact on small and medium-sized companies is particularly alarming,” said **Candid Wüest, Vice President at Acronis**. “Unlike large corporations, SMBs lack the funds, resources and expertise needed to face today’s threats. They therefore turn to IT service providers, but if those providers are attacked, SMBs are once again at the mercy of attackers.” With the help of so-called supply chain attacks targeting managed service providers (MSPs), cybercriminals can gain access to both MSP systems and their clients’ infrastructures. As demonstrated by last year’s attacks on SolarWinds and, more recently, Kaseya VSA, one successful attack means the potential to compromise hundreds or thousands of SMBs. Other notable findings include: - **Phishing attacks on the rise.** The number of social engineering incidents aimed at persuading users to click a link or file in a phishing email increased by 62% between the first and second quarters of this year. - **Cases of sensitive data disclosure are increasing.** While 1,300 ransomware victims reported public data leaks in 2020, in the first half of this year alone, 1,100 organizations have already fallen victim to this method, which attackers use to increase pressure to pay the ransom. - **Remote workers remain one of the main targets.** Dependence on remote workers has prompted attackers to focus their efforts on them. Two-thirds of employees use work tools for private purposes or their private devices for work. Acronis has recorded a 300% year-on-year increase in attacks on remote devices via the RDP protocol. The Acronis Cyberthreats Report 2020 is based on data on real attacks and threats provided by the Acronis Cyber Protection Operations Centers (CPOCs), which monitor and search for cyber threats around the clock. These data were collected between January and June 2021 from 250,000 unique endpoints worldwide, protected by the Acronis Cyber Protect solution launched this year.
