The survey was conducted in January 2018 and focused on the U.S. internet population, examining, for example, how they protect their valuable data, whether they know about ransomware, and which factors influence them when purchasing software. The findings show some improvement: Nearly 16% more people, compared to Q1 2017, know what ransomware is. Summer headlines about the WannaCry and Petya attacks, along with the continuous publication of new articles about hackers, appear to have increased general awareness of ransomware since the last survey for World Backup Day. The bad news, however, is that although awareness of ransomware is increasing, nearly half of the population (46.4%) still knows nothing about the threat. ### General findings - 27.8% of respondents do not know how to protect their data, photos, videos, and files - 46.4% do not know what ransomware is - 48.1% did not know that ransomware can delete their data or make their computer inaccessible - 43.7% do not think they need protection against ransomware Protecting the data of businesses and home users means continuously raising awareness of the need for reliable backup and effective anti-ransomware software.
