It reveals a significant increase in cyber email attacks – in the second half of 2024, a **staggering increase of nearly 200%** was recorded compared to the same period in 2023. From July to December 2024, nearly 50% of surveyed users were targeted by an email attack at least once. The number of email attacks targeting managed service providers (MSPs) also increased. Unsurprisingly, phishing was the preferred attack vector used by attackers to penetrate MSP networks – 33% of them experienced email phishing campaigns. This was closely followed by abuse of the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) and other remote access tools. This shows how cybercriminals exploit common MSP tools to gain unauthorized access and deploy malicious malware. The report highlights another interesting trend: as the use of remote monitoring and management (RMM) tools becomes increasingly widespread, in addition to greater efficiency, they unfortunately also bring significant risks to organizational security. Acronis telemetry data reveals that many organizations use several RMM tools simultaneously, creating blind spots that attackers can exploit. Without proper controls, RMM tools can become entry points for ransomware attacks, which cybercriminals often use to cause even greater damage. Screenshot Key findings of the latest Acronis Cyberthreats Report include: - The number of email attacks detected in the second half of 2024 increased by 197% compared to the second half of 2023, while the average number of attacks per organization during the same period increased by 21%. - 31.4% of all emails received in H2 2024 were spam, with 1.4% containing malware or phishing links. - Among all types of email attacks, phishing is dominant, accounting for 74%. - In 2024, ransomware attacks increased by 5% (1,712 ransomware incidents were reported), with many specifically targeting MSP providers and critical industries such as transportation, healthcare, and manufacturing. - Acronis blocked more than 48 million malicious URLs on endpoints in Q4 2024, a 7% increase compared to Q3 2024. - In 2024, attackers used personalized tactics and AI-driven strategies to exploit vulnerabilities and demand higher ransoms. This trend reflects a shift toward more sophisticated, large-scale attacks aimed at maximizing attack impact and financial gain.
