According to a recent Ponemon study, the average cost of a halted production line is **$22,000 per hour.** In the event of data being encrypted by ransomware, many manufacturing companies therefore consider paying the ransom under pressure. Over the past two years, ransomware has targeted an increasing number of manufacturing companies, and [many of them](https://www.acronis.com/en-us/blog/posts/ransomware-crushes-another-manufacturing-industry-target) have spent millions of dollars to restore their operations, including: - Belgian aircraft component manufacturer ASCO - Automakers Nissan and Renault - Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer TSMC - Norwegian aluminum manufacturer Norsk Hydro - British manufacturer of electric motors and pumps Hayward Tyler Acronis therefore recommends that manufacturing companies enhance the security of infrastructure critical to production continuity with the help of cyber protection systems. The latest [Forrester Research case study](https://www.acronis.com/en-us/blog/posts/forrester-examines-roi-enterprises-gain-acronis-cyber-protection) at an engineering equipment manufacturer, for example, found that an investment in an Acronis cyber protection solution saved the company hundreds of thousands of dollars and 1,200 person-hours in potential system recovery, while paying for itself in less than six months (see infographic). The Acronis solution was deployed in response to two ransomware attacks the company had faced in the past. “Manufacturing companies are becoming an increasingly popular target for ransomware creators because the damage caused by interrupted operations is many times greater than in other industries. Extortionists take this into account and assume that, in the interest of quickly resuming production, companies would rather pay,” said **Zdeněk Bínek, responsible for sales of Acronis solutions in the Czech and Slovak markets**. “One of our Czech manufacturing customers, whom we helped eliminate the consequences of a ransomware attack, said of the Acronis Backup application that by rescuing and quickly restoring their production data, it had paid for itself many decades in advance.” Like all Acronis solutions, **Acronis Backup** for enterprise backup includes **Acronis Active Protection** functionality, which provides an additional level of protection against ransomware. It monitors system processes in real time, automatically detects and stops attacks that other tools cannot stop.
