According to the survey results, which examined the approach, habits and awareness of ordinary users regarding data backup, the growing number of internet-connected devices in households increases the risk of personal data loss, and someone in 35% of households has already lost their data. Although awareness of ransomware has increased compared to last year's survey, more and more respondents are still losing their data. The survey focused on two areas: general backup topics and specific questions about ransomware. Key topics among the general findings:\ • 31.4% of respondents do not back up their personal data at all\ • 47.2% use cloud backup\ • 35.7% stated that they themselves or members of their family had lost their data at some point (34% last year)\ • More than four online devices are used by 49.1% of households, while 35% of households use one to three devices.\ Regarding ransomware, currently the fastest-growing threat, respondents said the following:\ • 41.8% said they had never heard of ransomware, although this is 20 percentage points less than a year ago\ • 56% of respondents realize that ransomware holds the user's system hostage and can irreversibly destroy data\ • 7% of users would be willing to pay the equivalent of more than CZK 3,000 to get their data back. “The good news is that the number of people who are aware of the danger of ransomware is increasing,” said John Zanni, president of Acronis. “But despite this fact, there are still quite a lot of users who do not back up at all. Secure backups are the most effective tool against data loss, and this year we will continue educating ordinary users and raising awareness of proper data protection.” The risks are growing not only for ordinary consumers but also in the corporate sector. According to Cyber Security Ventures, damage caused by ransomware exceeded USD 5 billion in 2017. This amount includes not only ransom payments, but also other costs such as lost profits due to downtime, the cost of recovery and restoring normal operations after an attack, investments in new security measures, lost business opportunities due to reputational damage, employee training, and more.
