**GFI Software** stated that the biggest threat to the smooth operation of corporate internet connections is the enormous **increase in the use of applications, cloud services and mobile phones** on corporate networks. Companies dependent on internet connectivity therefore now require tools enabling efficient use of internet connection bandwidth and, above all, application prioritization to ensure that critical business applications are always operational.

Based on experience operating the Exinda Network Orchestrator product for customers, GFI Software has obtained the following findings:

- A huge number of applications and cloud services now use internet connectivity – the main challenge today is not a lack of internet bandwidth, but **application prioritization**.
- Users are able to name **only 2% of the applications they use**; they are unaware of the 98% of applications using the internet connection – in reality, one user uses hundreds of applications at any given moment.
- Mobile phones, each with several dozen mobile applications, also connect to corporate Wi-Fi access points – with 100 mobile phones on the network, this represents a load of **4,000–5,000 mobile applications**.
- When tablets, workstations and laptops are included, a single corporate internet connection is used by **more than 10,000 applications**.
- With a 100 Mb/s connection, typically just **12,000 applications are enough to completely saturate the bandwidth**.

In addition to the use of an ever-increasing number of common applications, the growing problems with managing internet connectivity are also caused by the popularity of cloud services such as Office365, Dropbox, Salesforce and many others. Another reason for the current situation is the rapid worldwide growth of VoIP conferencing services such as GoToMeeting, Zoom and Skype. Last but not least, downloading an ever-increasing number of updates and patches also places a major strain on connections.

“In light of the increasingly frequent unavailability of critical applications or cloud services, efforts are being made to distribute bandwidth usage so that it is allocated primarily to key business applications,” said **Zdeněk Bínek, responsible for sales of GFI Software solutions in the Czech and Slovak markets**. “We are increasingly encountering customer requirements for solutions that make it possible to identify applications actually being used, evaluate the quality of their operation and create precisely targeted policies governing users’ application usage according to their roles and time constraints.”

GFI Software is seeing growing demand for the Exinda solution, particularly from banking and telecommunications companies that require high-quality VoIP transmission for communication with customers. Similarly, e-commerce stores need guaranteed response times for their websites so that impatient customers do not leave for competitors. In the public sector, interested parties include schools, which are increasingly using online shared platforms for teachers, parents and students. The solutions are also suitable for SMBs working with large streams, for example production companies requiring reliable connectivity to send reports to TV stations.

The **Exinda Network Orchestrator** solution, which GFI Software acquired in 2017, has for more than 11 years provided 4,000 businesses and organizations around the world with the assurance that their critical applications always work perfectly. [Exinda Network Orchestrator](https://www.gfi.com/products-and-solutions/network-security-solutions/exinda-network-orchestrator) offers analytical tools providing a comprehensive overview of network traffic, applies enterprise network traffic policies, and optimizes the performance of business-critical applications through efficient allocation of internet bandwidth. In the area of IT security, the solution can identify unwanted applications on the network and manage updates so that they do not overload the connection used by critical applications while still allowing their installation on all required devices.
