# Be Cyber Fit!

We tend to take care of our own safety in everyday life almost automatically. We use seat belts in the car, wear helmets when cycling and skiing, have security systems installed in our homes, stop at red lights and lock our cars. In the virtual world, however, we take considerably less care of our safety.

**We tend to take care of our own safety in everyday life almost automatically. We use seat belts in the car, wear helmets when cycling and skiing, have security systems installed in our homes, stop at red lights and lock our cars. In the virtual world, however, we take considerably less care of our safety.**

**PROBABLY** because in everyday life we know how to behave and what to watch out for. We know the threats and can therefore imagine their consequences; we do things automatically and act accordingly. In our digital lives, however, we are not as familiar with threats. Most of the time, we do not know exactly what they are or what they can cause. Yet, as we increasingly move into the digital space, damage caused by cyber incidents is gradually approaching the losses caused by “traditional” accidents in the real world.

### SEAT BELTS YES, BACKUP NO

At the beginning of this year, before the COVID-19 pandemic, Acronis conducted a survey among individuals and organizations. According to it, 68 percent of ordinary users have at some point experienced the loss of data or devices, either their own or those of family members. That is three percentage points more than in last year's survey. Ordinary users’ concerns about ransomware attacks (up 29 percent), cryptojacking (up 31 percent) and social engineering (up 34 percent) increased significantly. Nevertheless, there are still a large number of users who do not back up or otherwise protect their data. They move through the digital world as if driving a car without seat belts.

Companies protect themselves considerably more, yet 42 percent have already experienced operational disruptions as a result of losing business data—12 percentage points more than last year. At the corporate level, the frequency of backups is increasing in particular: the number of IT administrators who back up at least once a day (now 27 percent) or several times a day (now 15 percent) has risen significantly, while the number of those who back up only once or twice a month (now 20 percent) is rapidly declining. However, this is still not enough, because hacker attacks are aimed primarily at targets that will bring them the most money. A single attack on an unprotected organization can cause millions in damage and, in the case of a hospital, even endanger patients’ lives.

### WHICH IS EASIER TO REPLACE: A PHONE OR DATA?

We are conditioned to believe that losing a physical object in the real world is worse than losing digital information. That is not entirely true: some studies indicate that the loss of key data and private photographs is emotionally more significant for many people than losing the mobile phone on which unique images or videos were stored.

What can happen if we do not protect ourselves in the digital space as we do in the real one? Losing personal data and business documents requires a great deal of time or resources to restore them. Financial loss as a result of a ransomware attack may mean having to pay extortionists to restore access to critical data. Loss of privacy can occur through the disclosure of sensitive information, fake emails and invoices, followed by financial fraud.

Therefore, it is not true that the loss or theft of digital assets is negligible compared to the loss of physical ones. And as our dependence on the online world continues to grow, so will these losses.

### HOW FIT ARE YOU?

All that remains is to raise greater awareness not only of threats but also of solutions that need not be complicated or expensive. The Be Cyber Fit! initiative is focused precisely on increasing awareness of risks in the cyber world. It responds to a situation in which few people consciously neglect caring for their health in the real world, yet they underestimate risks in the digital world that can have equally serious consequences for both their personal and professional lives.

The biggest problem, then, is not security itself but the underestimation of threats. At **[www.budcyberfit.cz](http://www.budcyberfit.cz/)** individuals and companies can learn more about current risks in cyberspace. A simple form is available there which, once completed, tells respondents their Cyber Fit score. The initiative addresses consumers using their computers and mobile devices for personal purposes, professional users, and organizations using multiple computers.

If we want to behave responsibly in real life, we go to the doctor for preventive check-ups. If we want to behave responsibly in our digital lives as well, we should have an overview of the state of our cybersecurity system. Be Cyber Fit! aims to serve as a place where individuals and companies go for preventive check-ups of their cyber health.
