After an injury or illness that has damaged the spinal cord, following a stay in hospital and a rehabilitation centre, Centrum Paraple provides a springboard back into life, both physically and, above all, psychologically. In addition, the Centre also offers an opportunity to regain strength, gain experience or seek advice on a new life situation. **Challenges** It is estimated that there are 8,000 to 9,000 wheelchair users in the Czech Republic, while Centrum Paraple in Malešice, Prague, is able to help approximately 1,400 people with physical disabilities each year. The centre primarily focuses on direct personal assistance through three-week stays, but it can also provide remote assistance, for example by telephone. The main goal of the staff at Centrum Paraple is to break down various psychological barriers for their clients and strengthen their independence. The Centre employs approximately 80 people, most of whom provide therapy, direct assistance and care, including personal assistance; there is also a PR and fundraising department that helps secure resources for the Centre's activities and informs the public, potential future clients and their loved ones about its services. The Centre's activities are also supported by administrative staff.\ Employees use modern technologies to carry out their work and communication activities. The organisation previously operated MS Exchange as part of SBS Server 2003, which was inadequate and expensive. One pressing issue was the large volume of spam, which had to be handled by an external service layered above Microsoft Exchange. Over time, in line with modern working trends, some roles also began working from home offices, creating a need to support users requiring remote access to the Centre's system via a VPN network. **Solution and benefits** Gaia Connections, the IT solutions supplier for Centrum Paraple, first offered the Kerio Connect solution with better spam protection, which significantly helped eliminate unsolicited mail. Users also began using useful groupware features in Connect, including shared calendars, chat options and more. Thanks to its integrated antivirus, built-in archiving function and automatic backup, Kerio Connect proved to be an excellent alternative to the competing Microsoft Exchange. Another advantage of the solution is its cross-platform capability: it can run on MS Windows, Linux and MacOS, as well as on computer and mobile devices.\ In connection with the need for a secure VPN network, Gaia Connections recommended, based on its experience with other companies, the installation of the Kerio Control solution. It also made it possible to create secure Wi-Fi access for guests, separated from the internal Wi-Fi network for staff, as well as protection against web attacks, which is important given the sensitive data stored by the Centre and stricter regulatory requirements such as GDPR. The solution was perfectly suited from both the user and administrator perspectives, thanks to Kerio's user-friendly interface and simple configuration. **Return to a proven solution** However, in 2015, changes at the management level of Centrum Paraple also led to a change in IT strategy, and Kerio Control was replaced by another, less sophisticated solution. This was not ideal in terms of either security or functionality, and the level of support provided by the new supplier also declined. Therefore, after several years of operation, it was decided in mid-2017 to return to the original Kerio Control solution and the original supplier, Gaia Connections. It became clear that Control's functionality was broader and of higher quality, while also enabling administrators to work more efficiently and comfortably.\ In the future, the use of Kerio Control Statistics is being considered to evaluate the state of protection and subsequently improve it, and there are also considerations regarding Kerio Cloud, which would further streamline the management of communication and security.\ “Regarding the Kerio Control solution, we are pleased to be returning to something that worked well.
