We therefore asked IT Central Station whether they could conduct a survey among North American companies for us to examine the attitudes and practices of IT experts, system engineers, project managers, and business owners regarding the backup services they need. We were pleased to find that the results show companies of all sizes are actively protecting their data; and many more are preparing to overcome the complexities of today’s IT environment. Furthermore, an overwhelming majority (93% of respondents) are trying to find a backup solution that meets the requirements of today’s complex IT environment. ### The cost of being unprepared You probably already know that complex environments require unique support. Due to the enormous volumes of data created every minute, IT experts must constantly ensure that diverse systems operating both on-premises and off-premises work flawlessly and keep the business running. If systems go down, the cost can be high: The Rand Group reports that 98% of companies put the cost of downtime at more than $100,000 per hour. Backup is essential for the ability to restore data volumes—regardless of how large or granular they are—and get the business back up and running. ### What companies want from recovery solutions When you are sick at home, it can be difficult to get yourself back to work. But businesses cannot afford to slow down after they experience data loss. Survey respondents said that backup software must make recovery fast (68% of respondents) and simple (70%), and that systems should be as good as new after recovery—with 91% of respondents considering reliability essential. ### Fighting modern threats New ways in which cybercriminals rob businesses are growing like mushrooms after rain—or like data volumes in today’s world. Zero-day attacks, in which ransomware exploits a previously unknown software vulnerability, are becoming increasingly common. While traditional antivirus solutions provide protection against known strains of ransomware, they are considerably less effective against zero-day exploits. To protect themselves from ransomware attacks, businesses need protection that is as innovative and adaptable as the attacks themselves.
