**GFI Software: 40% of all spam contains ransomware**

*Corporate data encryption is most likely to result from unsolicited email, but the web, USB drives and unpatched systems must not be underestimated either*

**PRAGUE, July 24, 2017** – According to [**GFI Software**](http://www.gfi-software.cz/)**,** a provider of security solutions for corporate networks, the most common method of infecting corporate computers with ransomware is unsolicited email, which is responsible for nearly 60% of all ransomware infections. Nevertheless, SMB companies should also focus on protection against other attacks coming from the web, USB drives and through unpatched systems.

Aggregate data from GFI Software shows:

- 59% of ransomware infections in 2016 entered companies via email;
- 40% of all spam emails contained ransomware;
- Damage caused by ransomware increased from $24 million in 2015 to $1 billion in 2016;
- According to data from the US [National Cyber Security Alliance](http://www.denverpost.com/2016/10/23/small-companies-cyber-attack-out-of-business/), 60% of small businesses that fell victim to a serious cyberattack went out of business within 6 months.

“SMB companies are the group of businesses most at risk from ransomware because they cannot afford adequate IT departments and often greatly underestimate their IT security,” said **Zdeněk Bínek, responsible for sales of GFI Software solutions in the Czech Republic and Slovakia**. “Partial or complete loss of access to critical corporate information can have fatal consequences for their business.”

The main focus should be on filtering incoming corporate email, where the greatest danger lies, but other attack vectors must not be underestimated either. GFI Software recommends using specialized automated tools for regular updates, monitoring removable storage media and filtering access to potentially dangerous websites.

It is clear that SMB companies often cannot afford to acquire and manage such a large number of tools, which is why GFI Software has been offering integrated corporate network protection solutions since this year, whether a comprehensive [email protection solution](https://gfi-software.cz/gfi-oneconnect/) or a [centralized network management solution](https://gfi-software.cz/gfi-oneguard/). Both comprehensive solutions offer easy operation and a perfect overview for both corporate IT administrators and providers of external managed services.
