Special attention must now be paid to installation speed, strong encryption, and protection against service outages. A VPN creates a data tunnel between the local network and a remote user's computer, making the entire connection appear as if the user were sitting in the company's office. By encrypting transmitted data, it protects information stored on corporate servers from being read or stolen. This is particularly important now, as cyber attackers have sensed an opportunity and, in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic, are targeting unsecured connections. GFI Software's recommendations include: 1. **Installation speed.** With employees working remotely, the installation process must be as simple and fast as possible, ideally taking just minutes. 2. **Mobile device connectivity.** Many employees connect via mobile devices, so secure mobile VPN connectivity must also be available. 3. **Concurrent connections.** The solution should offer at least two concurrent connections at the same time. 4. **Service outage protection.** In the event of an internet outage, it is crucial for many companies to stay online by allowing the system to switch to a secondary connection until the primary one is restored. 5. **Supported protocol.** It is recommended to avoid the PPTP protocol with weak encryption and security and instead use L2TP, which is now an industry standard. 6. **VPN throughput management.** Limiting the throughput of certain data flows or specific services ensures the efficient operation of the entire VPN network. 7. **Pricing plan.** It is worthwhile to have a server license with a minimum number of users that can be flexibly expanded. “It is highly likely that even after the current epidemic has been overcome, remote work will remain many times more widely used than before – for example, it seems unlikely that many people will continue going to work even with a common viral illness,” said **Zdeněk Bínek, responsible for sales of GFI Software solutions in the Czech Republic and Slovakia**. “This will make the ability to quickly and flexibly set up secure connections for employees according to the specific situation and ensure business continuity without high additional costs all the more important.” GFI Software provides the **Kerio Control** solution, which is used by more than 25,000 customers worldwide.
