The overwhelming majority of users encounter unsolicited email, spending their working time filtering and deleting spam in the best-case scenario, or clicking dangerous links or providing sensitive information in response to fraudulent requests in the worst-case scenario. “The adoption of two-factor authentication (2FA) in email login processes has been relatively slow in the SMB segment,” said **Jozef Kačala, Vice President of Global Sales Engineering at GFI Software.** “However, its introduction has paradoxically created new risks. On the one hand, 2FA gives users a greater sense of security, reducing their vigilance, and on the other hand, it provides attackers with a new spam email topic, requesting, for example, the sending or resetting of a 2FA token and subsequently gaining access to the mailbox. This is why it is important not to leave everything to users' judgment and to use anti-spam filters directly at the mail server level.” Other spam trends this year will include increased ransomware distribution through unsolicited email, the use of emails for supply chain attacks, and a growing number of links to fake websites of logistics services, banks, payment gateways, and the like. Even in the case of “harmless” spam such as marketing announcements, there is at least a loss of user productivity, as users have to manually filter and delete dozens of unsolicited emails every day. Interesting data from the world of spam: - 333 billion emails are sent worldwide every day, 45% of which are spam – it is virtually certain that some will end up in every user's mailbox. - If someone receives 30 spam emails a day, they lose up to 5 hours a year filtering them. If they receive as many as 100 a day, the annual loss of working time is up to 15 hours. - 89% of GFI Software's global customers are targeted by spam campaigns repeatedly or regularly; among Czech and Slovak customers, the figure is 67%. - The most commonly used spam subject lines in 2022 concerned fake ID verification, winnings in an online competition, requests for missing information, account lock notifications, or suspicious activity on a bank account.
