*58% of companies have experienced an IT security breach in the past two years and are considering strengthening it*

**GFI Software: 71% of European SMBs see IoT as the main security threat of the future**

**PRAGUE, August 30, 2016** – [**GFI Software**](http://www.gfi-software.cz/)**,** a provider of enterprise network security solutions, reported that according to its survey of European SMBs conducted in cooperation with Infinigate, 58% of businesses have experienced an IT security breach in the past two years. The Internet of Things (IoT) trend is considered the main potential threat to enterprise security by 71% of the companies surveyed.

New trends also bring new risks, and it is positive that companies are aware of them – for example, more than 60% already apply a BYOD security policy that sets rules for using private mobile devices for work. However, most of the IT managers surveyed still consider corporate data security to be inadequate – in their view, the funds allocated to IT security (an average of 9% of total IT budgets) are too low given the increase in current and potential threats.

Key survey findings:

- 58% of European SMBs have experienced a security breach or data loss in the past two years;
- Of these incidents, 49% were caused by an external attack, 37% by intentional internal actions, 9% by the theft or loss of a physical device, and 5% by employee errors;
- Key potential threats arising from current IT trends identified by respondents include IoT (71%), cloud services (60%), social media (59%), and BYOD (59%);
- The main obstacles to improving enterprise IT security are low engagement from corporate management (54%), inexperienced staff (48%), limited financial resources (43%), risky employee behavior (41%), and the lack of adequate IT security solutions (29%).

“The first step to improving IT security in every company is to assign it an adequate priority,” said **Sergio Galindo, Chief Operating Officer at GFI Software**. “Neglecting it can result in unplanned financial costs, reduced customer satisfaction and employee motivation, loss of market share, and damage to the company’s reputation. It is therefore necessary to strengthen IT infrastructure security through effective security tools, employee training, and user education.”
