As many as 88% of SMB businesses are more or less certain that employees use corporate Internet access for non-work purposes. Current changes in working patterns mean that as people increasingly work from home, they also deal with their private matters at work more often. Using workplace Internet access for web browsing, social media communication, or online shopping is nothing unusual and is a reality in most companies. Rather than strictly prohibiting it or, conversely, allowing everything leniently, management should reasonably establish a policy for workplace web access usage and manage it and enforce compliance with the help of IT tools. This is particularly important during seasonal periods, such as the online purchase of summer holidays, when the likelihood of cyberattacks increases. Key findings of the local survey: - 72% of Czech SMB companies are certain that employees use the corporate web for non-work purposes as well, while another 16% believe this to be the case; 12% believe or are certain that they do not use it; - 38% of respondents tolerate the use of the corporate web for non-work purposes, while 4% do not address it at all; 31% of companies only block certain websites, and 19% occasionally use user web-access reports; - In connection with the misuse of web access, management is most concerned about sensitive corporate information leaks (71%), loss of work productivity (69%), and viruses being introduced into the corporate network (51%). “The survey shows that although a large majority of Czech organizations are aware of the consequences of uncontrolled access to the workplace web, a surprisingly high percentage of companies tolerate this situation or address it only on an ad hoc basis,” said **Zdeněk Bínek, responsible for sales of GFI Software solutions in the Czech Republic and Slovakia**. “One consequence of such an approach may be ransomware introduced into the network by a careless user, resulting in the encryption of critical corporate data. Creating an effective strategy for managing web access, supported by specialized tools, enables companies to respond to current web threats.” Specialized web monitoring tools help protect the corporate network against malware and phishing attacks from the web, maintain high employee productivity, prevent bandwidth congestion, and eliminate copyright violations involving content stored on corporate computers.
