The survey, conducted in August 2018 among users in the United States, Europe, and Asia, showed that **fewer than half of users still back up their personal computers**. Although many users still do not back up their data, public awareness of the need for data protection is growing, with the number of users backing up their PCs increasing by 2.8 percentage points compared to last year's survey. On the other hand, the number of households that experienced the loss of important data increased year-on-year by almost 4 percentage points. 26.4% of users would be willing to pay to unlock data encrypted by ransomware. Key survey findings: - 46.1% of respondents confirmed this year that they back up their personal computers (43.3% last year); - 39% of households stated that they had experienced the loss of important personal data (35.1% last year); - The most common causes of data loss are human error (30.6%), hardware failure (26%), ransomware or other malware attacks (13.2%), and device loss or theft (10.8%); - 26.4% of users are willing to pay to decrypt data affected by ransomware, while 73.6% would pay nothing. “Some might say that the unwillingness to pay to recover their data is a sign that people do not value it, but given the ever-increasing daily dependence on the data contained in computers and mobile phones, people certainly know the value of their information very well,” said **John Zanni, President of Acronis.** “The proportion of users who have ever lost important data will continue to grow, as will the number of backed-up computers. More and more people understand that the cost of a simple yet effective solution such as Acronis True Image is negligible compared to the cost of recovering lost or encrypted data.” Source: Article author: ZEBR.ai editorial team Read on ## More related articles [All articles](https://zebr.ai/en/blog) Contact ## Do you need a solution for yourself or for your client?
