It was the first backup product to offer effective behavioral protection against ransomware. At the end of the same year, with the release of Acronis True Image 2018, the [Acronis Active Protection](https://www.acronis.cz/produkt/acronis-ransomware-protection/) security feature was enhanced with another layer of security provided by a suite of artificial intelligence (AI)-based technologies. The release of the new [Acronis True Image 2019](https://www.acronis.cz/produkt/true-image-2019/) version naturally also brought significant improvements in security for your data, anti-ransomware technologies, and ease of use. ## New machine learning models As you may [remember](https://www.acronis.cz/tiskove-zpravy/acronis-true-image-2018-prinasi-domacim-uzivatelum-ochranu-dat-postavenou-na-umele-inteligenci/), Acronis uses machine learning models and AI to analyze call stack traces of Windows processes when behavioral heuristics need a “second opinion” to determine whether a process is truly ransomware. In Acronis True Image 2019, we deployed a **new model** for **call stack trace analysis**, based on the Gradient Boosting Tree technique. The idea behind this technique is that not all “trees” carry the same weight; a tree’s weight depends on the specific situation in which it is used. In previous versions, the software did not analyze how often particular frames were present on the stack, but it does now—so it uses only popular frames for learning, selected by a special internal translator. Removing rarely occurring frames from the learning process has several advantages, the most important being increased overall accuracy. This approach makes it possible to use **models of the same size** as before (or slightly smaller) while including much more data in the analysis. To illustrate, if we used the previous model with the current amount of data, the entire machine learning model would grow to tens of megabytes, roughly 10 times more than it is now. The innovative technique used both **increases performance by 150–200%** compared to the previous model and **improves accuracy**—the new model can identify a malicious executable masquerading as a PDF attachment in a newly received email. ## Protection for network storage and NAS devices The most valuable data is stored locally, but many work files may also be located on network storage, in local folders with remote access, or on NAS devices. Since many ransomware strains attempt to attack not only local files but also files on the network, Acronis True Image 2019 extends anti-ransomware protection coverage to network storage and NAS devices. Acronis Active Protection detects ransomware the moment it attempts to start encrypting files in shared storage. In addition, you can restore data to a local folder, ensuring file recovery in the event that an attack causes the availability of data on the network to become unstable. Users can disable protection for shared folders, but we strongly recommend keeping it enabled. *You can choose where data from compromised network storage will be restored.* ## Greater flexibility and easier use We continue to improve the usability of our solution in response to user feedback. One of our goals is to inform users better. Therefore, Acronis True Image 2019 provides information about ransomware sophistication—about attacks exploiting interpreters such as PowerShell, WScript, Java, Python, Perl, Ruby, cmd.exe, etc., or launching malicious DLLs through rundll32.exe, whether for infection or other activities. This technique is used by a number of ransomware families, including Locky, Cerber, CryptoWall, Crypt0L0cker, CTB-Locker, RAA, and many others. Information about ransomware classification and the attack vector used can help users decide whether to stop the process or let it continue running. *Instead of a notification about rundll32.exe, you will now see a notification about Not_Petya.dll.* *You will also correctly see information about a malicious script launched in PowerShell.* ## More security and convenience In addition to improved anti-ransomware protection, Acronis True Image 2019 includes [a range of new features](https://www.acronis.cz/true-image-2019-co-je-noveho/).
