If you are like most IT professionals, you probably do not protect it well enough. We do not mean to offend you – this is not our opinion, but the response of 62 percent of surveyed IT professionals worldwide, who stated that their security infrastructure has gaps that can be exploited to bypass it. This is just one of a number of similarly interesting [findings by the Ponemon Institute](https://img04.en25.com/Web/HPEarubanetworks/%7B948ac436-625f-4e59-b3a9-53a8ba5fe80c%7D_aruba-global-report-final.pdf?elqTrackId=77a90d4394bc4c89bc5de1ebe13aa3bb&elqaid=867&elqat=2), published in a thirty-page report at the end of September, which focuses on the potential use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to improve modern IT security. Other findings include, for example: - • Forty-five percent of respondents struggle to protect an expanding security perimeter as a result of the growth of the Internet of Things (IoT), Bring-Your-Own-Device work practices (BYOD), and mobile and cloud data storage. - • Forty-six percent of respondents see the persistence, sophistication, expertise and funding of attackers as the cause of frequent data security breaches. - • Sixty-four percent of respondents believe that new technologies, including AI and ML, are needed to understand and identify current threats. Innovations such as artificial intelligence and machine learning truly offer an opportunity to stay one step ahead of the rapidly evolving methods used by cybercriminals. This is not about general artificial intelligence, which so far we know only from stories such as I, Robot, Ex Machina or Prometheus, but about so-called *weak* artificial intelligence, which is generally effective at performing only one carefully predefined task. Machine learning is a subfield of artificial intelligence and uses algorithms and techniques that allow computers to improve within the scope of their task and learn from their own experience and recurring patterns, from which a computer can create models that lead to ever better orientation in an increasing volume of data. ## New threats require new protection methods Regular backups of systems, applications and files remain the most reliable way to minimize disruption to company operations. However, attackers are not idle and are adapting to this form of protection: newer malware, and ransomware in particular, often attacks backup software and the backups themselves in order to prevent victims from restoring their system to its pre-infection state. To protect company data, you therefore need a proactive, modern defense solution designed to deal with new threats.
