Financial, technical and legal documents, along with other work documentation, form the foundation of every business and must be protected. If they were to disappear for any reason, the company would most likely face major financial losses, if it survived at all. Every organization strives to prevent such data loss, which is the main reason why almost every organization has some form of backup strategy in place. Complete backups enable fast and easy system recovery – and in the event of a ransomware attack, eliminate the need to pay a ransom. Many companies complement their existing backups with cloud and hybrid backup solutions. Having a comprehensive backup plan is a good thing, but it is becoming increasingly important to have functional and secure backup software prepared above all else… and a recent test by the independent testing laboratory [NioGuard](http://www.nioguard.com/) helps demonstrate why this is truly the case. ### Backups are now a target To deny organizations the ability to avoid paying a ransom, cybercriminals have begun targeting backups, backup software and backup agents during ransomware attacks. Most modern ransomware actively deletes Windows Volume Shadow Copies – Windows' built-in backup functionality – while other ransomware strains [delete or encrypt backups](https://www.darkreading.com/endpoint/ransomware-will-target-backups-4-ways-to-protect-your-data/a/d-id/1330029?piddl_msgorder=thrd) of popular backup solutions, making the recovery process at the very least much longer than usual. In the past, backup solutions addressed this threat by offering cloud storage, the use of which isolated data from the threat. The new challenge lies in the fact that cybercriminals have begun attacking this “safe haven” as well. Various ransomware strains have already started blocking access to cloud storage services such as Google Drive or Dropbox, and cloud backup services will undoubtedly be the next target. Once a backup agent on an endpoint is compromised, it can provide an attacker with all the information needed to gain access to the cloud. As a result, the attacker can encrypt or delete all data in the cloud, naturally preventing anything from being restored from the cloud. Without these backups available, you will be forced to pay the ransom. If organizations follow the [3-2-1 backup rule](https://www.acronis.com/en-eu/resource-center/resource/17/) and have a copy of their data stored in another off-site location, they will be able to restore their data, but the process will still take longer than usual. ### Independently tested Given the real (and steadily growing) danger faced by backups, backup software and agents – both on-premises and in the cloud – the independent testing laboratory NioGuard decided to test selected popular backup solutions and their readiness to deal with new threats. The NioGuard report states: *“The test focuses on the resilience of product and service processes against typical attacks on security software, as described below, as well as on the protection of local backups and the product's own files. Ransomware is capable of encrypting local backups and backup program configuration files, thereby preventing file recovery. Furthermore, if attackers gain access to server processes or agent processes, they can delete not only local backups, but also those in the cloud.”* And the results are alarming: Of the four products tested, only [Acronis Backup](https://www.acronis.cz/produkt/acronis-backup/) proved successful. The other enterprise backup solutions were unable to stop most attempts to compromise the backup agent on a machine, aimed at taking control, stealing credentials or gaining access to the backups themselves. NioGuard specialists conducted 31 different tests simulating attacks on local backups, product files, processes, services and cloud storage (with the aim of disrupting backup and recovery services). Looking at the final results, Acronis Backup performed significantly better than competing products: Acronis passed the test successfully in 81 to 87 percent of cases, while its closest competitor achieved a success rate of only 19 percent. The success of the Acronis solution can be attributed to its comprehensive multilayered security architecture, which began to be implemented in Acronis products with the introduction of [Acronis Active Protection](https://www.acronis.com/en-us/ransomware-protection/) in January 2017. Although its primary goal is to protect data from ransomware, it also covers all attack vectors against backup agents running as part of the Windows operating system. Acronis Active Protection is currently implemented in a range of Acronis products. To continue successfully countering online threats, Acronis keeps improving this solution, adding support for more operating systems and enhancing the behavioral heuristics and machine-learning technologies on which the solution is based. ### Laboratory conclusion *“The results showed that most tested products are unable to defend against ransomware attacks in most cases, allowing attackers to make user backups inaccessible and disable backup and recovery services.
