*Linux operating systems, Android, Firefox and Acrobat Reader were among the Top 10 most vulnerable software products last year*

**PRAGUE, March 13, 2019** – [**GFI Software**](http://www.gfi-software.cz/)**,**a provider of security solutions for enterprise networks, stated that **software vulnerabilities continued to increase** in 2018, both in operating systems and applications. A total of **16,555 vulnerabilities** were recorded last year, which is **12.5% more** than in 2017, when 14,714 vulnerabilities were recorded. The highest number of new vulnerabilities was registered in the Debian Linux, Google Android and Ubuntu Linux operating systems, and among applications, in Mozilla Firefox and Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Information based on data from [The National Vulnerability Database](https://nvd.nist.gov/) shows that following the sharp increase in 2017, when the number of vulnerabilities more than doubled, the negative trend continued in 2018. The overall number of vulnerabilities last year was driven primarily by the increase in vulnerabilities in Linux operating systems, which occupied 5 of the 6 most vulnerable software products. A notable increase in vulnerabilities was also recorded in the firmware of Qualcomm products, a supplier of hardware platforms for mobile devices, consumer electronics and automotive control systems.

Key figures for 2018:

– The most vulnerable desktop operating systems in 2018 were Debian Linux (950 vulnerabilities), Ubuntu Linux (494) and Redhat Enterprise Linux Server (394). The most vulnerable Microsoft operating system (Windows 10) ranked only behind them, with 255 vulnerabilities.

– Among mobile operating systems, the highest number of vulnerabilities was registered in Google Android (611), followed at a distance by Apple iOS (125).

– Among web browsers, Mozilla Firefox was the most vulnerable (303 vulnerabilities), followed by Microsoft Edge (161) and Google Chrome (160), while Apple Safari (50) recorded a significant decrease compared to the previous year; among other applications, Adobe Acrobat Reader ranked highest with 286 vulnerabilities.

– The Top 5 software vendors with the highest total number of vulnerabilities include Debian, Google, Microsoft, Oracle and Redhat.

“In 2018, the unfavorable trend of increasing vulnerabilities continued as computer software gradually makes its way into other devices connected to the Internet in line with IoT,” said **Zdeněk Bínek, responsible for sales of GFI Software solutions in the Czech Republic and Slovakia**. “Attackers then exploit these vulnerabilities to attack corporate computer networks, which they can paralyze with ransomware, steal sensitive business data or otherwise damage IT infrastructure. Tools enabling regular vulnerability scanning and automated updates of all software on the network should therefore now be standard equipment for every organization.”

GFI Software offers the [GFI LanGuard](https://www.gfi.com/products-and-solutions/network-security-solutions/gfi-languard) solution, which provides automated update management for Windows, Mac OS and Linux, vulnerability scanning on computers and mobile devices, and network and software auditing. To increase security, it enables an asset inventory to be created for every device on the network, including tablets and smartphones that connect to Exchange servers. GFI LanGuard is also part of the [GFI Unlimited](https://gfi-unlimited.cz/) licensing model, which enables the use of up to 10 GFI Software products for a cost-effective, unified subscription.
