While ransomware protection already exists for PCs, laptops and mobile devices, other IoT devices are still completely unprotected. The following categories will be most at risk: - **Internet-connected cars**. An increasing number of modern cars have some form of connectivity, for example through a connection to the Internet or at least to a mobile phone. Many of them have a computer unit built on Android, Linux and Windows platforms, which face numerous attacks in computer systems. In the best-case scenario, ransomware may only immobilize the car; in the worst case, it may take control of the vehicle and cause an accident. The same applies to trucks, where even immobilization alone can mean financial losses for the operator. - Today's **smart homes** enable convenient remote control, including heating, electricity, kitchen appliances, locking or unlocking doors, etc. However, ransomware can just as easily take control, and hackers may demand a ransom – for example, in exchange for not causing a fire by turning on the oven. - **Medical devices** often run on the Linux operating system or a similar platform and are connected to the network via Ethernet. Ransomware attacks on healthcare facilities occur quite frequently, and it is only a matter of time before they spread to devices on which patients' lives may depend. In such a case, paying the ransom is essential. - There is an increasing amount of **wearable electronics**, and attacks on them have begun to be referred to as “ransomwear.” What has so far prevented its wider spread is the absence of anything worth extorting – infected watches contain nothing valuable, and in the event of infection, they only need to be reset and the applications reinstalled. However, someone may find it more convenient to pay $5 for unlocking rather than set everything up again, so a time may come when a mass attack on a large number of wearable devices can be quite profitable. Protection against such threats is provided by anti-ransomware protection. Currently, Acronis Active Protection functionality is available, which Acronis introduced as part of the Acronis True Image product in January 2017. It can currently protect systems on Windows and macOS X computer platforms, and a Linux version is also planned.
