## The FBI recommends backups in the fight against ransomware

Ransomware, i.e. extortion software, is the latest type of malware: if it infects a computer through an infected website or email attachment, it encrypts some or all data and makes it inaccessible to the user – until the attacked victim pays a ransom to an anonymous extortionist. In other words, the attacked victim's data may be held hostage. This has created an entirely new category of cybercrime.

The latest [article on Tech Crunch](http://tcrn.ch/1VsRYOs) publishes findings from the U.S. investigative agency, the FBI, which received more than 2,500 complaints about ransomware attacks that caused losses of $24 million. Incidents are multiplying, they are being written about more and more frequently, and victims include both individuals and organizations.

The good news is that tools and methodologies are emerging that make it possible to defend against these insidious forms of malware. And prevention exists that can be applied immediately. A special FBI agent from the cybercrime division [told The Washington Post](https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/these-hackers-can-hold-a-town-hostage-and-they-want-ransom--paid-in-bitcoin/2016/03/18/1a2e2494-eba9-11e5-bc08-3e03a5b41910_story.html?hpid=hp_hp-cards_hp-card-world%3Ahomepage%2Fcard) that the FBI recommends people back up their data, because once a computer has been attacked by ransomware, the chance of recovering data is very small.

Backup solutions such as Acronis True Image for individuals and small offices or Acronis Backup for businesses form a fundamental pillar of defense against ransomware, as well as against other [data loss threats.](http://www.acronis.com/en-us/blog/posts/disasters-are-inevitable-data-loss-doesnt-have-be-8-noble-truths) With effective backups, you can survive ransomware attacks and avoid paying ransoms for your data. You can easily restore your data to its pre-attack state. And because subsequent [downtime can also be costly](http://www.itproportal.com/2016/03/21/ransomware-downtime-more-costly-than-ransom/), you can restore the operation of attacked systems in the shortest possible time.

No anti-malware protection is perfect, which is why using a backup solution is the most you can do for the security of your data at any given moment—not only against ransomware threats, but also against all other forms of data loss. There is an easy and effective solution: [Acronis True Image](http://acronis.cz/domacnosti-a-kancelare/produkty/true-image-home/) – try it [here](http://www.acronis.cz/stazeni/ati2016/).
