# Backup and recovery

[**Disk backup**](http://www.acronis.cz/kb/zaloha-disku/)\
A disk backup means a backup of the contents of the entire disk**,** including the installed operating system, installed applications, and all data stored on the disk. Unlike a file backup, a disk backup also contains the boot record and hidden parts of the operating system, so when restoring a disk backup, the operating system is fully functional and able to boot (provided it was functional at the time the backup was created).

**[Partition backup](http://www.acronis.cz/kb/zaloha-oddilu/)**\
A disk partition backup means a backup of the contents of the entire partition, including the installed operating system (if the partition contains it), installed applications, and all data stored on that disk partition. Unlike a file backup, a system partition backup also contains the boot record and hidden parts of the operating system, so when restoring a system partition backup, the operating system is fully functional and able to boot (provided it was functional at the time the backup was created).

[**System backup**](http://www.acronis.cz/kb/zaloha-systemu/) A system backup usually means a backup of the system's working state that would allow the system to be restored to its original form. A classic example of software that allows you to create system backups is Acronis True Image. It creates system backups by backing up the entire disk partition on which the system is installed using the sector-by-sector method. A backup created in this way contains not only the operating system, but also all applications installed on the given disk partition and all data stored on this partition. Acronis True Image allows you to burn backups directly to CD and DVD, save backups to other disks/partitions, and store them in network storage. In addition, Acronis True Image also allows you to get a system up and running by restoring a system backup to a clean disk using Acronis boot media.

It is good practice to keep the operating system and working data stored separately. This ensures that in the event of a system failure requiring the system to be erased, you will not lose your data at the same time. If the computer has two hard disks, it is advisable to use one as the system disk and the other for storing working data. If the computer has only one disk, it is advisable to divide the disk into a system partition and a data partition. The [Acronis Disk Director Suite](http://www.acronis.cz/domacnosti-a-kancelare/produkty/disk-director-suite/) software will help you partition the disk.

**[Folder backup](http://www.acronis.cz/kb/zaloha-adresare/)**\
A folder data backup can be created in various ways. One example is simply copying the contents using scheduled synchronization, backing up a folder with content compression, and more.\
Acronis True Image offers folder backups that you can schedule. Backup contents are compressed according to your settings, reducing storage space requirements. You can burn backups to CD and DVD, save them to local and external disks, and store them in network storage. In addition, Acronis True Image can create system backups, disk backups, and much more.

**[Outlook backup](http://www.acronis.cz/kb/zaloha-outlook/)**\
When people refer to an Outlook backup, they usually mean archiving messages into an Outlook backup file and possibly copying the backup files to another folder. This principle is suitable for the long-term archiving of email messages. The disadvantage of this method is that messages not included in the backup archive are not backed up. If all messages are moved to the backup archive, working with them will be difficult.

**How can you solve this problem?**

1. You can use an alternative email client that directly supports email message backups.
2. You can use software for backing up Outlook and Outlook Express. There are several tools that can create an Outlook backup. One of them is [Acronis True Image](http://www.acronis.cz/domacnosti-a-kancelare/produkty/true-image-home/), which can back up Outlook down to the level of individual email messages, and another is Acronis True Image, which can additionally create system backups, disk backups, and much more.

**Partition backup**

A partition backup, or partition image, is a file or several files containing an exact copy of the partition from which the backup was made, including a working operating system (if it was on the disk partition from which the backup originates), installed programs, user settings, and data. Other terms used for a partition backup include: disk partition image, disk partition image file, and partition image.

**Windows backup – how to back up Windows**

A Windows backup usually means a backup of the system's working state that would allow the system to be restored to its original form. A classic example of software that allows you to create backups of the Windows operating system is Acronis True Image. It creates system backups by backing up the entire disk partition on which the operating system is installed using the sector-by-sector method. A backup created in this way contains not only the operating system, but also all applications installed on the given disk partition and all data stored on this partition. True Image allows you to burn Windows backups directly to CD and DVD, save them to other disks or partitions, and store them in network storage. In addition, Acronis True Image allows you to get a system up and running by restoring a system backup to a clean disk using Acronis bootable media.

It is good practice to keep the operating system and working data stored separately. This ensures that if a system failure occurs and it needs to be erased, you will not lose your data at the same time. If the computer has two hard disks, it is advisable to use one as the system disk and the other for storing working data. If the computer has only one disk, it is advisable to divide it into a system partition and a data partition. The [Acronis Disk Director Suite](http://www.acronis.cz/domacnosti-a-kancelare/produkty/disk-director-suite/) software will help you partition the disk.
