# Backup

**Disk backup**\
A disk backup means backing up the contents of an entire disk – including the installed operating system, installed applications, and all data stored on the disk. Unlike a file backup, a disk backup also contains the boot record and hidden parts of the operating system, so when restoring a disk backup, the operating system is fully functional and able to boot (provided it was functional at the time the backup was created).

**Partition backup**\
A disk partition backup means backing up the contents of an entire partition – including the installed operating system (if the partition contains one), installed applications, and all data stored on that disk partition. Unlike a file backup, a system partition backup also contains the boot record and hidden parts of the operating system, so when restoring a system partition backup, the operating system is fully functional and able to boot (provided it was functional at the time the backup was created).

**System backup**\
A system backup usually means a backup of the functional state of a system that would allow the system to be restored to its original form. A classic example of software that enables system backups is Acronis True Image. It creates a system backup by backing up the entire disk partition on which the system is installed using a sector-by-sector method. The backup created in this way contains not only the operating system, but also all applications installed on the given disk partition and all data stored in that partition. True Image allows backups to be burned directly to CD and DVD, stored on other disks / partitions, and stored on network storage. In addition, True Image also enables a system to be brought back into operation by restoring a system backup to a blank disk – using Acronis boot media.

It is advisable to store the operating system and work data separately. This ensures that if a system failure occurs and it needs to be deleted, you will not lose your data at the same time. If there are two hard drives in the computer, it is advisable to use one as the system drive and the other to store work data. If there is only one drive in the computer, it is advisable to divide it into a system partition and a data partition. Acronis Disk Director Suite software will help you partition the disk.

It is important to separate the operating system and data located on the same partition – the disk should properly have 2 partitions (for the system and for data, i.e. system and data). Why: the OS may become corrupted and you could lose everything on that partition; however, if it contains only the operating system, it is not such a problem because you only need to reinstall the system. If data is also on the same partition, it will be lost.

When backing up with Acronis, you do not need to worry about backups being duplicated – it identifies a backup on the partition itself and then does not include it in the backup.

Power Nap mode for MAC OS, where backups can run in the background while in sleep mode.

**Directory backup**\
A directory data backup can be created in many different ways – by simply copying contents through scheduled synchronization, backing up a directory with content compression, etc.\
Acronis True Image Home offers directory backups that you can schedule. Backup contents are compressed according to your settings, reducing storage space requirements. You can burn backups to CD and DVD, store them on local and external disks, and save them to network storage. Acronis True Image can also create system backups, disk backups, and much more.

**Outlook backup**\
When people refer to an Outlook backup, they usually mean archiving messages into an Outlook backup file and possibly copying the backup files to another directory. This principle is suitable for long-term archiving of email messages. However, the disadvantage of this method is that messages not included in the backup archive are not backed up. And if you move all messages to the backup archive, working with them will be difficult. What is the solution? You can either use an alternative email client that directly supports email message backups, or use software for backing up Outlook and Outlook Express. There are several tools that can create an Outlook backup. One of them is Acronis True Image Home, which can back up Outlook down to the level of individual email messages. Acronis True Image can also create system backups, disk backups, and much more.

A new feature is backing up **Office 365** to the cloud, including content in OneShare and Outlook.com.

**Mobile backup to PC**

1. Install the application
2. Verify that the PC and mobile device are on the same Wi-Fi network
3. Scan the QR code

Backing up to selected Wi-Fi networks allows users to choose which connection will be used for backups.

**NEW IN VERSION 2020**: dual protection, meaning that if we have the cloud variant, local backups can be replicated to the cloud in this edition
