# Disk partition image - how to create one

A partition image, or disk partition image, is a file that contains an exact copy of a disk partition. A partition image contains everything included in the disk partition from which the image was created. If the partition contains an operating system and data, the image of this partition will also contain the operating system, data, and user settings. Specialized software is designed for creating partition images. A classic example of software for creating partition images is Acronis True Image Home.

**What is a partition image used for**\
A partition image is usually used as a backup. If data is lost, restoring the image returns the data to the partition. Some software also enables bare-metal recovery – recovery to bare metal – and can restore a partition image even when the hard drive does not contain an operating system, making it possible to get the operating system running again and restore the data. A classic example of software that enables bare-metal recovery is Acronis True Image Home.
