# Object storage

Object storage, sometimes also referred to as an object database, is used to store data by dividing it into separate units or objects – elementary structures that represent the file itself, additionally extended with metadata.

Why use object storage?

Object storage solves the main problem related to scalability. The speed at which we create data is constantly increasing, which means that this problem will worsen over time.

Users gain a number of advantages with object storage:

- High transaction performance and parallelism, massive scalability
- Data mobility across the entire world
- Backup-less solution (data volumes in the range of hundreds of TB and PB can no longer be backed up using traditional mechanisms, and security is based on the geographical distribution of data and multiple copies)
