Many companies today are struggling with slow internet, which can result in the unavailability of critical business applications, including email, ERP systems and IP voice communications. Frustrated users then typically call for expanding internet connection capacity so they can perform their work tasks. However, in many cases, the issue is not the “slow speed” of corporate connectivity, but a dramatic increase in the applications used on the network, most of which are non-work-related or consume unnecessarily large amounts of bandwidth.
According to a recent local survey by GFI Software, internet connection capacity is set sufficiently for 63% of Czech companies; for 34% of companies it is insufficient during peak periods, and for 3% it is chronically insufficient. Czech and Slovak SMBs mostly use corporate internet connections of up to 100 Mbit/s (79%), while another 18% use speeds of 100–500 Mbit/s and only 3% use speeds above 500 Mbit/s. Importantly, however, even smaller companies today use an average of 15 business applications, while their number and demands on internet connectivity continue to grow.
