Acronis has published the results of its global survey focused on personal data backup. Based on an examination of the attitudes, habits and awareness of ordinary users regarding data backup, it was found that someone in 65% of households has lost their personal data. The number of users who do not back up at all continues to decline, with backups to local or external drives prevailing.
Overall, the results obtained indicate growing user awareness of the threats associated with the misuse of personal data. This positive trend is probably the result of increasing reports of data security breaches and the loss of personal data of customers of social networks, banks, hotels, insurance companies, airlines and many other sectors. In terms of the number of consumers who never back up their devices, this year saw the lowest figure in the history of Acronis surveys.
The survey also shows an increasing number of devices per household – households with multiple devices are now the norm, and each user therefore has an ever-increasing number of access points that should be protected. As dependence on data grows, so does the value consumers place on it.
Key survey findings:
- 65.1% of respondents said that they or someone in their family had experienced the loss of personal data or devices (computers, mobile phones, etc.)
- Nearly 70% of households use three or more internet-connected devices
- Only 7.3% of respondents do not back up their personal data at all
- 62.7% use backups to local or external drives
- Personal information and documents are most valuable to users (45.8%), followed by photographs, videos and music (38.1%), and work documents (9.4%)
- The total amount users would be willing to pay to recover their data has risen sharply – willingness increased across all price ranges, and, for example, 6.2% of users would be willing to pay more than $1,000.
“More than ever before, technology users today must be aware of the risks and threats associated with its use and must actively protect themselves,” said Zdeněk Bínek, responsible for sales of Acronis solutions on the Czech market. “The good news is that users’ most valuable personal data can be protected virtually 100% through a combination of the 3-2-1 backup rule and innovative technologies included in Acronis True Image 2019, the best-selling solution for personal backup.”
