Acronis recommends using backup with active ransomware protection in connection with the current WannaCry ransomware pandemic attack. According to the latest information, the attack affected 200,000 Windows computers in more than 150 countries worldwide and may recur again soon.

According to Acronis experts, files encrypted by WannaCry ransomware cannot be decrypted, and even paying the requested ransom does not guarantee that vital files will become accessible again. The new type of ransomware also spreads rapidly through unprotected corporate networks and infects all other devices on the networks.

To protect against further attacks, Acronis therefore recommends:

  • Ensuring that the operating system and applications are regularly updated
  • Having up-to-date antivirus and anti-malware systems
  • Backing up data regularly outside the computer or local network, ideally to the cloud
  • Using a backup solution with active ransomware protection

The Acronis True Image 2017 New Generation product, for example, includes Acronis Active Protection functionality, which proactively protects user files and their backups by identifying and blocking ransomware in real time. According to the independent AV-TEST report Data Protection and Backup Software Test, Acronis is the only product capable of detecting and stopping ransomware with nearly 100% effectiveness. The comparative test report Comparative Assessment of Data Protection/Backup Products on Protection, Performance, and Usability by MRG Effitas, in turn, states that Acronis True Image was the only solution able to protect against all tested ransomware threats.

“Standard backup products are no longer sufficient against the latest attacks – only a solution combining active and passive protection can provide the maximum level of protection for important corporate data,” said Nikolay Grebennikov, Acronis Vice President responsible for technology development.

Acronis True Image 2017 New Generation has been available since January 2017, while the Acronis Backup Advanced enterprise backup solution with active ransomware protection will be announced within a few days.
