Acronis announced a new version of Acronis Files Connect (formerly ExtremeZ-IP), providing Mac users with instant access to all available shares and DFS resources, as well as fast search that is many times faster than the built-in Finder application.

Acronis Files Connect streamlines the integration of Mac computers into Windows-based networks. It focuses on ensuring more reliable and higher-performance connectivity between Mac computers and shared files in Windows environments or DFS resources through AFP and SMB protocols. The result is less need for support, higher productivity, and greater employee satisfaction in companies with mixed Mac/Windows environments.

The new solution is easy to use, reliable, and fast. With Acronis Files Connect, locating and accessing an item in a file share of any size takes just three clicks, compared with the 10 clicks required for a single share in Finder. An internal Acronis test showed that a user needs only three seconds to search 250,000 files using a remote share with Acronis Files Connect, compared with 25 minutes when using Finder connected via SMB. In fact, full-content search is not commonly available for Macs remotely connected to files using the SMB protocol. Acronis Files Connect solves this problem by using multiple simultaneous file shares without reducing performance or reliability.

New software functionality

The latest version of Acronis Files Connect introduces new server-side file indexing capabilities and new lightweight Mac applications providing a unified view of all remote file repositories. New features include the following:

  • Ability to specify the AFP and SMB protocol as required for a given file share
  • Automated support for file shares
  • Full-content Spotlight search in one or multiple file shares simultaneously
  • Easy network printer management
  • Indexing updates for granular real-time search
  • Controlled file content indexing aimed at significantly reducing the size of the search index.
  • Support for file tags on Windows and Mac computers

“Acronis Files Connect is the only solution that addresses the demand of Mac users for connectivity to Windows environments, NAS file servers, and DFS resources. The solution includes new capabilities and advanced functionality, yet it is easy to administer. In short, it provides transparent integration of Mac computers into Windows networks,” said John Zanni, CMO at Acronis.

Opportunity for Acronis partners and resellers

With more than 91 percent of enterprises now having users who work on Mac computers, Acronis Files Connect opens up new business opportunities for Acronis partners and resellers. The new solution can be offered together with Acronis backup and data storage solutions, while meeting everyday data protection and availability needs. It is designed to simplify the management of mixed Mac/Windows environments and reduce the burden on IT administrators who address Mac user issues related to file access.
