The growth of cloud storage is being accelerated by declining distrust in data security and falling prices

PRAGUE, May 27, 2025 – Acronis, a global leader in cyber protection solutions, presented the results of a survey among its Czech and Slovak IT partners on the use of cloud storage for backing up corporate data. Survey respondents stated that if their customers use storage outside the company for backups, 62% of businesses already prefer cloud storage. However, the survey also showed that a significant percentage of organizations still do not follow the basic 3-2-1 rule in their backup processes, exposing themselves to potentially fatal problems.

The golden 3-2-1 rule refers to creating 3 copies of data, on 2 different media, with at least 1 located outside the company's physical location (offsite). Previously, organizations typically placed their offsite backups on tapes or replicated them to another branch office. Recently, however, the number of organizations interested in placing backups in secure cloud storage has been growing dramatically. Customers usually cite distrust in cloud security and excessively high costs as the main barriers to a faster transition to cloud storage.

The most interesting survey findings:

  • When storing backups outside the company, 62% of customers use cloud storage, 62% use NAS at another location, 26% use tapes, and 21% replicate backups to another branch office.
  • The main concerns associated with using cloud storage include distrust in cybersecurity (47%), high costs (33%), and insufficient guarantees for ensuring regulatory compliance (20%).
  • 67% of respondents stated that fewer than half of their customers comply with the 3-2-1 rule; for 18% of respondents, it is more than half but fewer than three quarters, and for 15%, it is more than three quarters of customers.

“Despite some persistent reservations, most Czech and Slovak customers are no longer afraid to store their important data in cloud storage, which is certainly good news,” said Štěpán Bínek, Cloud Solutions Sales Manager for Acronis at ZEBRA SYSTEMS. “Today's cloud technologies provide better security than self-managed offsite storage, greater resilience against operational outages, and highly competitive prices. In the case of European cloud providers such as Impossible Cloud, they also offer a 100% guarantee of compliance with European regulations.”
