Acronis stated that according to a local survey conducted among participants of the Acronis Roadshow conferences in Prague and Ostrava, 29% of business users cited ransomware attacks as the main cause of data loss in their organization, 12 percentage points more than last year. Although 90% of Czech organizations already back up regularly and many of them also regularly test recovery, the number of successful ransomware attacks continues to grow.
“A ransomware attack carried out using so-called ‘spear phishing’ can now be performed even by a fifteen-year-old user,” said at the conference Aleš Hok, Acronis solutions sales manager at Zebra systems. “With the help of a targeted, spoofed email, attackers can gain access to corporate systems at minimal cost, encrypt data and its backups, and then successfully extort victims. Backup alone is no longer sufficient to protect data; it must be supplemented with proactive protection against ransomware attacks that can stop an infection before it causes damage.”
The survey conducted by Acronis at customer conferences shows:
- 62% of respondents stated that their organization performs regular backups, a further 26% test recovery, and another 2% also use disaster recovery systems; only 10% back up only occasionally;
- 57% of businesses experienced data loss as a result of system outages, including 24% more than once;
- Ransomware is the main cause of corporate data loss for 29% of respondents (17% last year); hardware failure (69%) and human error (44%) are still the most common causes;
- 79% of respondents would most welcome adding ransomware protection functionality to their backup solution, 40% disaster recovery functionality, and 31% a data authenticity verification function.
“Traditional backup is already outdated; in order for organizations to be able to face the risks of the modern age, they must begin to rely on comprehensive cyber protection,” said Zdeněk Bínek, responsible for sales of Acronis solutions in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. “Today, it is no longer only about data security itself; businesses must also protect themselves against data unavailability, falsification, and privacy breaches. That is why our customers are showing increasing interest in solutions such as Acronis Cyber Backup, built on five vectors of cyber protection, which include safety, accessibility, privacy, authenticity, and data security.”
