77% of ransomware attacks target four segments: professional services, the public sector, healthcare, and retail

PRAGUE, August 28, 2017 – GFI Software, a provider of business network security solutions, warned that, in terms of current ransomware attacks, the retail sector is among the four most at-risk segments. Retail businesses should therefore strengthen their protection against malware, as companies such as Alza.cz, Hannah, and McDonald‘s have done by deploying Kerio Control.

According to the Global Threat Intelligence Report 2017, 77% of recent attacks targeted businesses in the following four industry segments:

  • Professional services: 28%
  • Public sector: 19%
  • Healthcare: 15%
  • Retail: 15%

For retail companies, a ransomware attack and the resulting loss of access to critical data are extremely dangerous, as any outage lasting even just a few dozen minutes can result in losses worth millions. If customers cannot buy goods immediately in a store or e-shop, they can easily turn elsewhere. This is why retail companies place great emphasis on strengthening business continuity and protection against web-based and other attacks.

McDonald’s in the Czech Republic and Slovakia uses Kerio Control to protect its infrastructure from web threats. Kerio Control primarily helps identify problems, as log files can reveal increased internet traffic and often detect an attack within HTTP transmission before the local antivirus on the computer has a chance to respond. To ensure better services, McDonald’s ICT department uses statistics and reports from Kerio Control Statistics.

Kerio Control is a comprehensive internet gateway solution that provides network security for small and medium-sized businesses. It includes a firewall and router, intrusion detection and prevention (IPS), antivirus protection, VPN, and content and application filtering. In the Czech Republic and Slovakia, it is used by many other customers across all industries, such as Alphaduct, Průmstav, the Trnava Region, and many others.
