GFI Software: the most effective protection against malicious emails is antivirus software on the mail server

For most SMB companies, protection against email attacks remains the most important part of security

PRAGUE, 27 April 2023 – GFI Software, a provider of security solutions for enterprise networks, stated that according to its survey conducted among partners in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, phishing is the greatest threat to SMB companies. Of all tools, 56% of respondents consider antivirus software on the mail server to be the most effective tool for protection against malicious emails.  The survey was conducted in April 2023 among resellers of ZEBRA SYSTEMS, the exclusive distributor of GFI Software solutions in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Southeastern Europe.

Email is an IT infrastructure component that has long been the most frequently used vector for cyberattacks. In light of increasingly dangerous phishing attacks, protection against malicious emails is therefore among the most important aspects of corporate cybersecurity. In addition to traditional antivirus and antispam tools, customers are increasingly turning to comprehensive mail filtering solutions or complex EDR platforms.

The most interesting survey statistics include:

  • 83% of respondents stated that email protection is among the most important measures for securing IT infrastructure, followed by endpoint protection (76%), password security (44%) and vulnerability elimination (39%).
  • The main threats in email are phishing emails (79% of respondents), spam (67%), spoofed addresses (49%) and emails containing malicious URL links (33%).
  • Phishing is also the leading threat among all other attacks (74% of respondents), followed by ransomware (40%), exploitation of software vulnerabilities (35%) and misuse of credentials (33%).
  • The most effective protection against email attacks is antivirus software on the mail server (56%), antispam (44%), comprehensive EDR (41%) and antivirus software on endpoints (34%).

“From our customers' experience, we know that the more layers are placed in attackers’ way, the lower the risk of compromise,” said Marie Baranová, Sales Manager for GFI Software solutions in the Czech Republic and Slovakia at ZEBRA SYSTEMS. “In the case of email threats, a combination of antivirus, antispam and anti-phishing filters is essential, together with blocking spoofed emails, detecting fake senders, blocking specific IP addresses and other techniques.”

The GFI MailEssentials solution offers 14 antispam filters, 3 antivirus engines and malware scanning tools as part of a comprehensive email security package. Deployed on mail servers including Microsoft Exchange or Kerio Connect, the solution can filter out unwanted mail before it reaches email inboxes, thereby saving server space and time while eliminating the risk of compromise caused by user error.
