The devices auto-discovery feature enables the following:
- automating the process of securing agent installation and device registration through automated detection of devices in your Active Directory domain or local network
- installing and updating agent protection on multiple devices
- reducing resource requirements and device management in larger Active Directory environments through synchronization with Active Directory
Device discovery can only be performed by agents installed on Windows devices. Currently, not only Windows devices can be detected, but remote software installation is only possible on Windows devices. For devices without any installed agent, the Auto-discovery feature is hidden – the Multiple devices section is also hidden in the new device wizard.
How it works:
During scanning on a local network, the agent uses the following technologies for discovery:
- NetBIOS discovery
- Web Service Discovery (WSD)
- ARP table (Address Resolution Protocol)
The agent attempts to obtain the following parameters for each computer:
- Name (short/NetBIOS hostname)
- FQDN
- Domain/workgroup
- IPv4/IPv6 addresses
- MAC addresses
- Operating system (name/version/family)
- Device category (workstation/server/domain controller)
When AD scanning is performed, the agent attempts to obtain almost the same parameters for individual computers as those listed above. The difference is that it additionally obtains the organizational unit (OU) parameter, more information about the name and the operating system itself, and does not obtain IP address and MAC address information.
