GFI Software: working from home and mobility pose the greatest security risks to corporate networks
64% of SMBs are most concerned about user carelessness, 55% about ransomware
PRAGUE, July 25, 2016 – GFI Software, a provider of enterprise network security solutions, has published the results of its local survey focused on enterprise network security, conducted in June among Czech customers and sales partners. According to this survey, the main security incidents include carelessness by users and ransomware, feared by 64% and 55%, respectively, of small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs).
Current work trends that enable employees to work from home or while traveling bring companies increased productivity, but on the other hand increase the stress on IT administrators, who must strengthen the protection of enterprise networks. The risk increases especially with the growing use of personal mobile devices for work, unsecured connections on home networks, and the use of public Wi-Fi connections. This can result, for example, in a ransomware infection, as happened in the recent attack on Office 365, and in the enterprise network being out of operation for hours or even days, which can have catastrophic consequences for the company's business.
Key findings of the local survey:
- The greatest security risks to enterprise networks for SMBs are the trends of working from home (51%), mobility (50%), use of social networks (45%), and public Wi-Fi connections (23%)
- In terms of specific incidents, they are particularly concerned about user carelessness (64%), ransomware attacks (55%), theft of company data (50%), and failure or theft of company devices (36%)
- In the event of an enterprise network outage, 18% of companies need it restored within one hour to avoid serious business consequences; for 19% it must be within 4 hours, for 59% within 24 hours, and for 4% within one week.
“Based on our experience, we know that the greatest danger is not usually natural disasters, but users who fail to follow corporate security policy guidelines and whose careless behavior often puts IT administrators in impossible situations,” said Zdeněk Bínek, responsible for sales of GFI Software solutions in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. “In combination with mobility trends, social networks, and increasingly frequent ransomware attacks, it is necessary to consider comprehensive protection of your enterprise network against threats coming from all different directions.”
