The global ransomware attack is here again. Initial reports of attacks came from Russia and Ukraine, but the problems quickly began to spread. According to Nikolay Grebennikov, Director of Research and Development at Acronis, more than eighty businesses were affected, indicating that companies are still not prepared for similar attacks.

The attack affected all areas of Maersk's business. The American pharmaceutical company Merck also announced that its computer network had been affected by the attack. The Dutch delivery company TNT also experienced problems with its computer systems, and the multinational food conglomerate Mondelez International reported technical issues in various regions. However, Ukraine was hit the hardest, and the attack also affected Russia's largest oil company, Rosneft. Significantly affected countries also include Italy, Israel, Serbia, as well as Central and Eastern European countries, including the Czech Republic.

According to findings by VirusTotal, during the first phase of the attack, only 4 out of 61 antivirus services were able to detect the ransomware. This demonstrates the importance of a backup solution and active protection, such as Acronis Active Protection integrated into the latest versions of the Acronis True Image and Acronis Backup backup systems. It was able to detect both the WannaCry ransomware and the current Petya.
