SMB organizations are trying to address security gaps manually and with the help of incomplete tools, which places a significant strain on company resources
PRAGUE, August 27, 2024 – GFI Software, a provider of enterprise network security solutions, has presented the 5 most common security gaps currently faced by SMB businesses and organizations. SMB companies are struggling with a range of challenges, including unpatched software, open ports and inadequate mobile device security.
When looking at the common vulnerability challenges faced by small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), these are sure to come up:
- Unpatched operating systems and software – When an inconspicuous “update available” notification appears, users usually click “Remind me later.” These updates are not only about new features; they often include critical security patches that prevent unauthorized access. However, SMBs generally do not have a tool that automatically scans the network for missing updates to operating systems, web browsers, and third-party software, and can centrally deploy them if needed.
- Open ports and misconfigured services – Open ports and poorly configured services are like unlocked doors into a corporate network. They are easy entry points for people looking for an opportunity to penetrate the network. To prevent this, open ports and shared directories need to be checked. The current database describes 60,000 known issues, and it is certainly not possible to track all of them manually.
- Insufficient network visibility – You cannot protect what you cannot see. If an administrator does not know everything that is connected to the network, they cannot secure it reliably. That is why it is important to first identify and catalog every device on the network – computers, phones, printers, servers, and more. This comprehensive inventory creates a clear and detailed picture of the entire digital ecosystem. Only then can an organization be sure that it has all devices under control and secured.
- Weak mobile device security – In the past, only company computers, printers, and other devices were used in the workplace. Now that everyone also uses phones and tablets for work, the corporate network extends far beyond office walls, creating many potential weak points. These devices therefore need to be isolated or secured in the same way as office computers – whether it is a company phone or a personal tablet used for work.
- Compliance gaps – Maintaining compliance with legal regulations, whether general or specific to a particular industry, can be a real challenge. Most of them require generating security reports proving compliance with the required rules, which can be an impossible task without the right tools.
“Expanding IT infrastructures mean a dramatic increase in network vulnerabilities and related security threats for many SMB companies,” said Jozef Kačala, Vice President of Global Sales Engineering at GFI Software. “Many organizations try to address these challenges with freeware or incomplete tools that do not solve the situation comprehensively, but only partially. Comprehensive tools such as GFI LanGuard offer a complete, centralized overview of gaps and the security of local networks, leveraging extensive automation and artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities.”
GFI LanGuard enables organizations to successfully address a wide range of network vulnerabilities. From checking open ports and automated centralized patching, through network device inventory including mobile phones, to automated reporting to demonstrate regulatory compliance. LanGuard now integrates the CoPilot AI component, which provides on-demand security advice tailored to specific requirements.
